How to repair Porsche instrument cluster

Experiencing problems with Porsche instrument cluster? Porsche speedometers may have several issues or faults, such as for example the worn of the dials or the odometer counter that doesn’t spin on classic models (911 G, 964 or 993), or the unreadable LCD screen on the youngtimers (911 996 and Boxster 986) and on the recent models (911 997, 991, Boxster / Cayman 987, 981, 982 and Macan). The solution that gets usually offered is the replacement of the entire instrument panel, expensive solution, when it’s actually possible to repair the dashboards simply replacing the single defective component, such as a broken gear or an LCD display.

Minitools recently analysed instrument cluster problems on the following Porsche models:

Let’s see how to fix Porsche instrument cluster:

Porsche instrument clusters: problems and solutions for Porsche 911 (1974-1989)

If the Porsche 911 G instrument cluster is not working, or the Porsche 911 odometer stopped working, they probably have problems with the Porsche instrument cluster odometer gears, problems caused by wear or simply by the time passing. For 25 years, Minitools branded parts have been designed and produced to repair dashboards and radios on various cars, including Porsche cars. So, to repair Porsche 911 (all versions including Porsche 930) odometer gauge, it’s simply necessary is to replace the damaged gear with the relevant Minitools gear. With our gears and the aid of a professional, it is possible to repair Porsche instrument cluster, without having to replace the whole dashboard.

Porsche instrument clusters: Problems and solutions for Porsche 911 (964 and 993)

The problems of Porsche odometer gears are extended to some other models as well, such as:

  • Porsche 911 (964) from 1989 to 1993;
  • Porsche 911 (993) from 1994 to 1998.

In addition to the odometer problems listed above, which are caused by broken or worn gears inside the gauge, and can be sorted replacing the gears (see tutorial), they may have worn or damaged gauge faces (also known as dials), or  they may show problems to the Porsche digital odometer display (the tachometer gauge display could show a spot or lines on it, which would make the shown information unreadable). No problem, we got that covered too. We produce a wide range of dials for Porsche 911 964 and 911 993 instrument clusters, which are high quality printed on polycarbonate and perfectly adaptable to the original instruments. To repair the defective Porsche tachometer display, you would need to remove the tachometer gauge and replace the faulty display with the Minitools display SEPDISP52 (km version) or SEPDISP52V2 (miles version). Perfetto, problem solved!

Porsche instrument clusters and climate control module: problems and solutions for Porsche 911 (996) and Boxster (986)

Now we’ll examine some instrument clusters and climate control module faults for the following Porsche models:

  • Porsche 911 (996) from 1997 to 2006;
  • Porsche Boxster (986) from 1996 to 2004.

These show problems related to the three Porsche instrument cluster displays, where a spot on the dashboard displays makes them difficult to read. Therefore, in order to repair Porsche 911 (996) and Boxster (986) instrument cluster, you need to remove it from the car, disconnect the defective displays and replace them with the displays you find in the Minitools kit SEPDISPKIT-46A-B-C (miles version) or in the kit SEPDISPKIT-46A-B-C-V2 (km version). The models listed above also have problems to climate control module displayIf the Porsche climate control LCD display is unreadable, all you have to do is replace the faulty Porsche heater control display with the Minitools display SEPDISP51. To help you replace the displays we’ll guide you step by step with the following tutorials:

Porsche instrument clusters: problems and solutions for Porsche Boxster - Cayman (987) MK1, MK2 and Porsche 911 (997) MK1, MK2

Minitools has also examined the instrument clusters problems of the following Porsche models:

  • Porsche Boxster – Cayman (987) mk1 from 2004 to 2008;
  • Porsche Boxster – Cayman (987) mk2 from 2009 to 2013;
  • Porsche 911 (997) mk1 from 2004 to 2008;
  • Porsche 911 (997) mk2 from 2009 to 2012.

They are affected by problems with the Porsche instrument cluster central and side displays (partial and total odometer and clock and external temperature), where a spot on the displays could make them unreadable. So, to repair Porsche 911, Boxster and Cayman instrument clusters with bad pixels in the gauge cluster display, remove it from the car, disassemble it carefully, disconnect the faulty central display and replace it with Minitools display SEPDISP56, whose FPC has to be simply press-fitted into the connector placed on the PCB, without needing to be soldered, and remove and replace the side screens with Minitools displays SEPDISP74A (left side – partial and total odometer / trip) and SEPDISP74B (right side – clock and external temperature), which are simply connected to the cluster by two conductive rubber strips (zebra / elastomeric connector). Replacing the LCD screens is not a very complicated process, but there are some tricky steps, especially removing the instrument cluster dials, which is necessary to remove the displays. To easily remove the dials, we designed a removal tool (code SEP-ESTR28) with which you can easily take out the retaining rings that secure the gauge face of the instrument clusters. Furthermore, in case the retaining rings got accidentally broken using the wrong tools to remove it, we produce new rings (code SEP-P003) that perfectly replace the originals. With the help of a car professional, Minitools replacement LCDs can be used to repair stuck pixels in Porsche dash cluster LCD display issue for the above models, without having to replace the whole dashboard.

Minitools have realized, for illustrative purposes only, a video tutorial on how to fix Porsche instrument cluster display problem:

Porsche instrument clusters: problems and solutions for Porsche 911 991, Boxster – Cayman 981 / 982 and Macan 95b

We then analysed the problems of the following Porsche instrument panels:

  • Porsche 911 (991) from 2011 to 2019;
  • Porsche Boxster (981) from 2012 to 2016;
  • Porsche 718 Boxster (982) since 2016;
  • Porsche Cayman (981) from 2012 to 2016;
  • Porsche 718 Cayman (982) since 2016;
  • Porsche Macan (95B) since 2014.

These models have issues to the side display of the instrument clusters (multifunction on-board computer display) and problems to the chime buzzer of the dashboard (the blinkers don’t make any sound and warning sounds are not working).

So, to repair Porsche 911, 981, 982 and Macan instrument panel you would need to remove it from the vehicle and replace the faulty component (display or speaker), with Minitools replacement parts SEI-DISP165 or SEP-SPEAKER20.

Both the new display and the new speaker are plug and play, perfectly adaptable to the original instruments, and they won’t need any soldering or programming.

To help you with the repair, we made two video tutorials:
